Ethernet Cables for Perfect Local Network Connections
After years of working with computers and other wired devices in our homes and offices, we're all very familiar with what Ethernet cables look like. We use Ethernet patch cables all the time, whether to connect to an Internet router, a wireless access point, or another network device like a printer.
Ethernet cables are used to connect computers in a local area network using the Ethernet protocol, which is a standard protocol (LAN). They are meant to run at 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps, or 1 Gbps and use twisted-pair cables and modular connectors.
Ethernet cables send data in the form of frames, which contain the source and destination addresses and error-checking functions. IEEE 802.3 defines the media access control (MAC) of both the Ethernet’s physical and data link layers.
Ethernet Cable Types and Features
Ethernet technology employs three different types of cables:
Coaxial Cables: A single wire is surrounded by an insulator, metal shield, and a plastic casing in a coaxial cable. The insulator controls the signal. The metal shield shields the line from electromagnetic interference, ensuring that the signal is not lost in the middle of a transmission. The plastic shell also protects the shell from external threats like water and fire. Televisions typically employ coaxial cabling. There are two types of coaxial cable used:
- Thicknet Cables: This type of coaxial cable is slightly thicker than others and has a high shielding rating. Long distances have been covered with thicknet coaxial cables. However, these cables are unreliable. To join such coaxial lines, a vampire tap is utilized.
- Thinnet Cables: This coaxial wire is standard in size. In comparison to thicknet cables, these cables are more dependable. Coaxial cables with BNC connectors are used to connect them.
Twisted Pair Cables: In Ethernet technology, this is the most often used cable. Twisted pair cables have a plastic shell that surrounds a pair of 2 or 4 copper wires. There is no crosstalk since the copper wire pairs are wrapped in each other. Crosstalk is a mistake that occurs when the signal from one wire interferes with the signal from another wire. There are two types of twisted-pair cables:
- Shielded: Shielded twisted pair cable has a shield cover built into it. Electromagnetic interference is prevented by using these cables.
- Un-shielded: Unshielded twisted pair cable has no shield and provides more protection than protected twisted pair cable.
Twisted pair cable is divided into numerous types. These bits are classified according to the number of twists per inch.
- Cat3: Every inch of cable in this category contains three twists.
- Cat5: Every inch of this category cable has five twists.
- Cat5e: In this category of cable, there are five twists per inch, and the pairs twist as well.
- Cat6: Every inch of this category cable has six twists.
Fiber Optic Cables: Electronic signals are used to convey data across coaxial cable and twisted pairs. Fiber optic cables, on the other hand, transmit data through light. Thin threads like thin wire run through fiber optic cables. These cables are made of either plastic or glass.
The bandwidth of fiber optic cables is greater than that of metal cables. This indicates that the cable is capable of carrying more data than other cables. The signal is less likely to be damaged by fiber optic cables. In comparison to other wires, fiber optic cables are thin and light.
Fiber optic cables are used in Ethernet technology in two different ways:
- Single-mode fiber: Single-mode fiber optic cables only transmit one data ray at a time.
- Multimode fiber: Multimode fiber optic connections can transmit many data photons at the same time.
Ethernet Connectors and Types
Bayonet-style locking connectors are known as BNC connectors. A/V applications, as well as older devices and third-party monitors, are common uses for them. Computer peripherals are connected via DB connections. They're available in a variety of pin configurations.
Telecommunications and serial applications employ RJ connections, which are modular connectors.
USB connectors come in a wide range of sizes and designs.
Benefits of Using Wireless Ethernet Cables
Increased Productivity – WLAN enables "untethered" access to the network and the Internet.
A simple and quick network setup - At a user's workstation or work area.
Installation Flexibility - WLANs can be deployed in places where cables can't, and they're easy to set up and move around.
Lower Cost-of-Ownership - Because there is no cabling with wireless LANs, installation costs are lower; as a result, savings are highest in regularly changing situations.
Scalability - A wireless network’s expansion and reconfiguration may be less difficult than expanding a wired network.
